Abstract:
Provided is a liquid-crystal composition which satisfies at least one characteristic selected from characteristics such as a high nematic-phase upper-limit temperature, a low nematic-phase lower-limit temperature, large optical anisotropy, large positive permittivity anisotropy, and high stability to ultraviolet rays, or has a suitable balance of at least two of those properties. Provided is a liquid crystal display element containing such a composition, particularly a liquid crystal display element encased in a capsule, and a liquid crystal display element as a component of a display element for enabling 2D/3D switchable display. A liquid crystal composition containing a specific compound having large optical anisotropy as a first component, a specific compound having large positive permittivity anisotropy as a second component, and a specific compound having large optical anisotropy as well as a high upper-limit temperature or a low lower-limit temperature as a third component; and a liquid crystal display element containing the composition.
