Abstract:

Provided is a liquid crystal composition which satisfies at least one of such characteristics as a high upper limit temperature, low lower limit temperature, low viscosity, adequate optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability with respect to ultraviolet light, and high stability with respect to heat, or which has an adequate balance among at least two of the above-mentioned characteristics. Also provided is an AM element which has a short response time, high voltage holding ratio, low threshold voltage, high contrast ratio, long service life and the like. A liquid crystal composition which contains as a first additive, a quenching agent, and as a first component, a specific compound having a large negative dielectric anisotropy, while having a nematic phase and a negative dielectric anisotropy. This liquid crystal composition may also contain, as a second component, a specific compound having a high upper limit temperature or a low viscosity and a specific polymerizable compound.
