Abstract:
Provided are: a liquid crystal composition including a polymerizable compound (or a polymer thereof) and a polar compound, whereby vertical alignment of the liquid crystal molecules can be achieved by the action of the polymerizable compound and the polar compound; and a liquid crystal display element containing the composition. This composition satisfies at least one characteristic such as high upper-limit temperature, low lower-limit temperature, low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy, and large negative dielectric anisotropy, or has an appropriate balance with respect to at least two of the aforementioned characteristics. A nematic liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound as a first additive and a polar compound as a second additive, and having negative dielectric anisotropy, wherein the composition may contain a specific liquid crystalline compound having large negative dielectric anisotropy and a specific liquid crystalline compound having a high upper-limit temperature or low viscosity. A liquid crystal display element containing the composition.
