Abstract:

Provided are: a liquid crystal composition which is capable of achieving vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules by the action of a polymer; and a liquid crystal display element which contains this composition. A nematic liquid crystal composition which contains, as a first additive, at least one polar compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (1), and which has a negative dielectric anisotropy; and a liquid crystal display element which contains this composition. In formula (1), R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, or the like; R2 represents a group represented by -OH, -OR0, -NH2, -NHR0 or -N(R0)2, wherein R0 represents an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms; each of ring A and ring B independently represents 1, 4-cyclohexylene or 1, 4-phenylene; Z1 represents a single bond or the like; each of Sp1 and Sp2 independently represents a single bond, an alkylene group having 1-7 carbon atoms, or the like; and a represents a number of 0-4.
