Abstract:
Provided are: a liquid-crystal composition in which liquid-crystal molecules can be aligned perpendicularly by the action of a polymer; and a liquid-crystal display element including the composition.
The composition is a nematic liquid-crystal composition which contains, as a first additive, at least one compound selected from among polar compounds represented by formula (1) and which has negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid-crystal display element includes the nematic liquid-crystal composition.
In formula (1), ring A and ring C are each independently cyclohexyl, phenyl, etc.; ring B is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, etc.; Z1 and Z2 are each a single bond, etc.; Sp1, Sp2, and Sp3 are each independently a single bond, a C1-10 alkylene, etc.; P1, P2, and P3 are each independently a polymerizable group; a is 0 to 3; and b, c, and d are each independently 0 to 4, the sum of b, c, and d being 2 or larger.
