Abstract:
Provided are a liquid crystal diffraction element whereby ghosting can be suppressed in a head-mounted display such as VR glasses, an image display device, and a head-mounted display. The present invention has at least an optically anisotropic layer formed using a liquid crystal composition including a liquid crystal compound, the optically anisotropic layer having a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which the orientation of the optical axis originating from the liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating along at least one in-plane direction, the length along the one direction over which the optical axis rotates 180 degrees being one period, and the period gradually changing along the one direction, and when the principal surface of the optically anisotropic layer is observed by optical microscopy in a region having a period equal to or less than the average period Λa, where Λa is the average period over 50 periods along one direction from the single period of greatest length, the ratio of the maximum value and the minimum value of the width of 30 successive bright lines and the ratio of the maximum value and the minimum value of the width of 30 successive dark lines in said region are both 1.2 or less.
