Provided is a liquid crystal display device, in particular a TN-type liquid crystal display device, having excellent viewing angle characteristics. The liquid crystal display device has at least: first and second polarizing layers arranged so as to have mutually orthogonal absorption axes; first and second substrates arranged mutually facing, between the first and second polarizing layers, and at least one thereof having a transparent electrode; a twisted nematic mode liquid crystal cell arranged between the first and second substrates; a first optical compensation film arranged between the first polarizing layer and the liquid crystal cell, and including a first transparent supporting body and a composition containing a polymerizable liquid crystal compound; and a second optical compensation film arranged between the second polarizing layer and the liquid crystal cell, and including a second transparent supporting body and a composition containing a polymerizable liquid crystal compound. The liquid crystal display device is characterized by: the in-plane retardation (Re (550)) in a wavelength of 550 nm in both the first optical compensation film and the second optical compensation film being 10-200 nm; the ratio between retardation ((R [+40]) measured from a direction inclined 40° from the normal direction and retardation (R [−40]) measured from a direction inversely inclined 40° from the normal direction, in a plane orthogonal to the in-plane slow axis, fulfilling either formula (I) or formula (I').
