Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a liquid crystal display element that has a liquid crystal composition which does not require an alignment treatment or an alignment film on the substrate, and solves this problem by providing a low molecular polar compound which homogeneously aligns a liquid crystal medium on a substrate, and for example, is characterized by being represented by general formula (1). In formula (1), M is a nonpolar group having a carbon number of 1 or more, and P is a polar group.
