Abstract:
Disclosed is a liquid crystal material which has low optical absorption in the ultraviolet region. Also disclosed are a method for producing a liquid crystal material and a liquid crystal device. Specifically disclosed is a compound represented by the following chemical formula (I): wherein R represents an alkyl group or alkenyl group arbitrarily containing one or more oxygen or sulfur atoms, Y is independently selected from oxygen and sulfur, n is an integer of 2-8, X represents a direct bond, a C1-4 alkylene or a C2-4 alkenylene, and A is selected from various specific cyclic structures. This liquid crystal material (compound) has low birefringence and is stable to ultraviolet radiation. Consequently, the liquid crystal material is useful for liquid crystal devices requiring low birefringence such as reflective displays and liquid crystal devices exposed to high-level ultraviolet radiation such as fluorescent display cells.
