Abstract:
Provided is a bimesogenic compound which exhibits high solubility in other bimesogenic compounds and substances used in conventional liquid crystal display elements, such as liquid crystalline compounds, liquid crystal compositions, chiral dopants, additives including antioxidants and ultraviolet absorbents, and polymerizable liquid crystal compounds, while maintaining desired physical properties. A compound represented by formula (1); a liquid crystal composition which contains the compound; a composite fiber containing a liquid crystal, which is obtained from the liquid crystal composition; and a liquid crystal display element which is obtained from the composite fiber containing a liquid crystal. MG1-Za-Sp-Zb-MG2 (1) In formula (1), each of MG1 and MG2 independently represents a mesogenic group; each of Za and Zb independently represents, for example, an alkylene group having 1-4 carbon atoms; and Sp represents an achiral structure represented by formula (sp-1). -α-X-α- (sp-1) In formula (sp-1), each α independently represents, for example, a linear alkylene group having 1-20 carbon atoms; and X represents a group represented by formula (I), formula (II) or formula (III). In formula (I), Ra represents an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms; in formula (II), each of Rb and Rc independently represents, for example, an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms; and in formula (III), Q represents, for example, an oxygen atom.
