Abstract:
A novel liquid-crystalline optical film in which discotic liquid crystals are hybrid-aligned and fixed over a large area. This optical film comprises a single-layered film of a hybrid-aligned discotic liquid crystal material wherein the orientation of the discotic liquid crystals is fixed, and the angle formed by the director of the discotic liquid crystal in the proximity of the interface of the film upper surface and the film surface is different from the angle formed by the director of the discotic liquid crystal in the proximity of the interface of the film lower surface and the film surface. This film exhibits excellent effects particularly as a compensation plate of a liquid crystal display.
