The present invention addresses the problem of providing a lithium ion battery separator the thickness of which can be thinned, which has excellent tensile strength and cuttability, low internal resistance, a low internal short-circuit failure rate, and high cycle characteristics, and providing a lithium ion battery comprising this separator. [Solution] The lithium ion battery separator comprising a heat-resistant fiber and a synthetic resin short fiber is characterized in that a fibrillated heat-resistant fiber having a modified freeness of 300 ml or lower is contained as the heat-resistant fiber, the content of the fibrillated heat-resistant fiber having the modified freeness of 300 ml or lower being 1.0% by mass or greater but less than 5.0% by mass with respect to the entirety of the fiber component contained in the separator. Modified freeness: value measured according to JIS P8121-2:2012 except that, as the sieving plate, an 80-mesh metal net with a wire diameter of 0.14 mm and an opening of 0.18 mm was used, and the sample concentration was 0.1%.
