The purpose of the embodiments of the present invention is to provide a lithium ion secondary battery which has excellent charge and discharge cycle characteristics. One embodiment of the present invention is a lithium ion secondary battery which is provided with: a battery element wherein positive electrodes and negative electrodes are laminated with separators being interposed therebetween; and a case that contains the battery element and an electrolyte. The lithium ion secondary battery is characterized in that: each negative electrode comprises a negative electrode collector that is formed of a metal and a negative electrode active material layer that is formed on the negative electrode collector and contains a negative electrode active material and a binder; the negative electrode collector and the negative electrode active material layer are respectively provided with cracks that communicate with each other; and the cracks extend from the inner side to the outer peripheral portion of the negative electrode.
