Description:
LOAD HANDLING EQUIPMENT AND METHOD IN PORT

The object of the invention is a load handling equipment and method by which a loaded or unloaded transport vessel in its entirety or a mere load is moved from a floating position to a loading and unloading place and the same operation vice versa the loaded or unloaded transport vessel in its entirety or the mere cargo is moved back to the water. In this load handling method a hoisting machinery, an inclined plane, a movable load jetty and traverse direction carriages are used.

In today's ports the cargo from a vessel onto the wharf and vice versa is lifted by cranes or a so called Roll- on Roll-of method is used. There are in use many kinds of cranes; floating, movable on rails or on rubber wheels on the wharf and fixed to the wharf.

In all above mentioned present methods the transport vessel is in a floating position during the time of loading and unloading operations and, that the wharf or its part is constructed fixed, taking into account the tide fluctuations.

The present port technique causes expensive investment costs, which means high cargo handling price per unit in reimbursement. The situation is emphasized on water roads where the tide fluctuates a lot and a depth of the water route or crossing bridges allow traffic of quite small vessels only.

Using the Roll-on Roll-off method construction costs of the port are lower than for a port with cranes, but the fluctuations of tide cause special requirements for load handling equipment such as ramps, trailers and tractors.

It is also to be observed, that in. Roll-on Roll-off method trailers often belong to the cargo, which means less net cargo capacity especially in small vessels. If it is intended to handle the cargo units by a fork lift the inclination of the ramp can easily become an impediment and the working is unsafe.

In the shipyard industry vessels are lifted from the water up on the land (the yard) and the intention is to do something on the vessel itself; such as maintenance, repair, stocking in shipyard etc.

The purpose of the invention is to bring forth a method for load handling in port, by means of which method above mentioned disadvantages are eliminated. In addi¬ tion the aim with the invention is to bring about a method, by taking advantage of which the investment costs can be kept favourable compared with the present ones and by using of which method the handling speed of the loads is fast and the working is safe. Further the purpose of the invention is to bring forth an equipment for applying of the method, which equipment is favourab¬ le, safe and easy to operate.

The purpose of the invention is achieved by the method and equipment, which are characterized by that, what is presented in the patent claims.

In the method in accordance with the invention the loaded or unloaded transport vessel or a mere load is transferred up on the land on top of on the load jetty placed traverse direction carriages, supported on which the loaded or unloaded transport vessel or a mere load is placed, to the spot reserved for the handling of the load concerned. In the method in accordance with the invention the shipyard technique has been adopted in a

new and an inventional way in the port usage. With the help of the traverse direction carriages of the movable load jetty the transport vessel loaded or unloaded or the mere load can be transferred by using the rails even long distances.

The applied technique makes it possible to 'move big loads as one unit in its entirety along the port area to the handling place reserved for the cargo in question, or it is possible to move a loaded or an unloaded vessel back to the water.

With this equipment and method quite remarkable handling speed can be achieved per one cargo unit and the working can be done safely.

The equipment and other port investment costs in accor¬ dance with the invention are relatively favourable com¬ paring with the present port solutions: - The length of the inclined plane (slipway) is only as big as the longest vessel which in the port concerned is to be handled.

- The variation in the water level can be taken into account in the construction of the rails on the inclined plane and in the structure of the load jetty.

- To rise the capacity of the port, it is merely neces¬ sary to make more tracks on the load handling area.

- The lifting equipment by which the landed vessel can be loaded or unloaded is light, multipurpose and remar- kably cheaper than harbour cranes presently in use.

- The method makes possible the loading, unloading and transit handling of loads of different types (goods/people), when the load jetty is hauled up on the land or in a suitable position in regard of the actual water level and the transport vessel.

- The movement of the load in the water direction is carried out by the gravity.

The movable jetty is according to the invention favou¬ rably equipped with a crane by which cargoes can be lifted from the transport vessel onto the load jetty or vice versa. The same crane can also be moved from the load jetty on to the rails of the port area to make lifts there according to the situation in question.

In the following a detailed explanation of the invention is given by referring to the drawings, in which picture 1 describes an equipment for application of the method in accordance with the invention seen from the side picture 2 describes the equipment in accordance with the picture 1 seen in the front picture 3 describes the equipment in accordance with the picture 1 seen from above picture 4 describes an equipment for application of the method in accordance with the invention seen from the side picture 5 describes the equipment in accordance with the picture 4 seen in the front picture 6 describes the equipment in accordance with the picture 4 seen from above. In the applications according to the pictures 1-6 is described schematically a port furnished with the load handling equipment in accordance with the invention, in which by the load jetty 1 and by the hoisting machine¬ ry 3 a loaded or unloaded transport vessel 5 or a mere load 8 and a crane 7 is lifted supported by rails 2 of an inclined plane from the water on the land or it is launched from the land to the water. The loaded or unloaded transport vessel or the mere load is resting upon the load jetty supported by the traverse direction carriages 4 on which the transport vessel loaded or unloaded or the mere load can be moved to the loading and unloading place within the reach of a loading and an unloading device 6 .

By this method using the-crane which is operating on the wharf it is possible to organize the load handling simultaneously between transit vessels, which are moved up on the wharf, and the vessel which is floating on the side of the wharf. This method shortens remarkably load handling time, reduces traffic on the harbour area, reduces the need for auxiliary handling equipment and the need of the stocking area at the port, because the load is transferred directly from one vessel to another vessel by the same hoisting using one crane.
