Abstract:
Among other things, a signal is emitted from a signaling device and is captured by stimulus detectors location on a vehicle, including an autonomous vehicle. Properties of the signal are analyzed, potentially in concert with other information, to determine the precise location of the signaling device and therefore the precise goal location for picking up a rider of the autonomous vehicle. In response to the calculation of the precise goal location, the autonomous vehicle attempts to travel to a location as near as possible to the precise goal location to facilitate entry of the rider into the vehicle.

AMENDED CLAIMS

received by the International Bureau on 16 July 2018 (16.07.2018)

1. A method comprising:

determining, by an autonomous vehicle system, that an autonomous vehicle is within a pre-defined amount of distance of a general goal location for a goal location activity;

based upon determining that an autonomous vehicle is within the pre-defined amount of distance, engaging in location signaling activities between the autonomous vehicle and a user, the location signaling activities including an application running on a device of the user;

based upon engaging in location signaling activities between the autonomous vehicle and a user, presenting, at a remote device to a remotely located tele-operator, information

determinable from the location signaling activities, and

based on information determinable from the location signaling activities, determining, within the pre-defined amount of distance of the general goal location, a precise goal location based on a location indication signal sent by the user or the device of the user.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a stopping place in the vicinity of the precise goal location.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the engaging in location signaling activities includes conveying information about the precise goal location in the vicinity of the general goal location.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the engaging in location signaling activities includes sending a location response signal by or on behalf of the autonomous vehicle.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the engaging in location signaling activities includes sending, by the autonomous vehicle by line-of-sight, a location indication signal identifying the location of the autonomous vehicle.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the engaging in location signaling activities includes sending, by the autonomous vehicle, acknowledgment information with respect to the precise goal location.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving, by another vehicle, the location signaling activities, and communicating with the autonomous vehicle or a user device based on the signals.

8. A computer readable medium carrying instructions that when executed by one or more processors carry out one or more steps according to any of the preceding claims.

9. A method comprising:

determining, by an autonomous vehicle system, that a precise goal location is within a pre-defined amount of distance of a general goal location to which an autonomous vehicle is proceeding;

determining, by the autonomous vehicle system, a stopping place at which the autonomous vehicle and a user will engage in a goal location activity, the goal location activity being within the pre-defined amount of distance of the precise goal location; and

upon determining a precise goal location, determining at least one of a bearing of the autonomous vehicle and a distance from the user to the autonomous vehicle.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the determining at least one of the bearing of the autonomous vehicle and the distance from the user to the autonomous vehicle includes repeatedly determining at least one of the bearing of the autonomous vehicle and the distance from the user to the autonomous vehicle.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the determining a precise goal location is based on a location indication signal sent by the user or a device of the user.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the determining a precise goal location is based on information received other than by a location indication signal.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprising receiving identification of the general goal location from an external source at the autonomous vehicle.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the precise goal location changes over time.

15. The method of claim 9, further comprising engaging in location signaling activities by the autonomous vehicle or the user or both of them.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the location signaling activities comprise a location response signal sent by or on behalf of the autonomous vehicle.

17. A computer readable medium carrying instructions that when executed by one or more processors carry out one or more steps according to any of the preceding claims.

18. A method comprising:

determining, by an autonomous vehicle system, a precise location of a user within a predefined distance of a general goal location to which the autonomous vehicle is proceeding, and upon determining the precise location of a user is within the pre-defined distance, signaling between the user and the autonomous vehicle.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the signaling comprises controlling an application running on a mobile device of the user.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the signaling comprises electronic signaling or nonelectronic signaling.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the non-electronic signaling includes one or a combination of two or more of displaying an image or sequence of images, emitting a sequence of light signals, emitting a sequence of sound signals, emitting a wireless communication signal, or engaging in gestures or facial expressions.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the electronic signaling comprises signaling from one or a combination of two or more of a smartphone, a tablet, a smart watch, smart glasses, or other smart wearable device.

23. A computer readable medium carrying instructions that when executed by one or more processors carry out one or more steps according to any of the preceding claims.
