A lubricant comprising a lubricating oil or grease which contains as a base oil a perfluoropolyether oil having a dynamic viscosity at 40°C of 50-1,500 mm²/sec and containing no (CF₂O)_n groups as repeating units for the polymer. The lubricant is usable in applications where it comes into contact with graphite or molybdenum disulfide or applications where it comes into contact with an aluminum material. As the perfluoropolyether base oil is used F(CF₂CF₂CF₂O)_mC₂F₅ or RfO[CF(CF₃)CF₂O]_p(CF₂CF₂O)_qRf'. Even when this lubricant is used in various applications such as those, the high-temperature characteristics (high-temperature durability) are not considerably impaired. When the base oil has a dynamic viscosity of 50-250 mm²/sec, the lubricant is excellent also in low-temperature characteristics.
