Abstract:
In a mechanism for stopping rotation of a vertical shaft with at least two brakes, the present invention provides a machine tool that more reliably detects brake malfunctions, the machine tool comprising a ball screw extending in the vertical direction, a drive motor that rotationally drives the ball screw, a moveable portion that moves vertically along the ball screw in accordance with the rotation of the ball screw engendered by the drive motor, at least two brakes for preventing lowering of the moveable portion when the electrical power supply to the drive motor has stopped, a brake control unit that releases at least one of the at least two brakes when the electrical power supply to the drive motor has stopped, and a detection unit that detects the presence or absence of lowering of the moveable portion or a lowered distance of the moveable portion caused by the release of the at least one brake so as to detect a defect of the unreleased brake of the at least two brakes.
