Abstract:

A machine tool 1 characterized by having a first main shaft 3a, a first drive source 9a for moving the first main shaft 3a in the axial direction, a second main shaft 3b, a second drive source 9b for moving the second main shaft 3b in the axial direction, and a control means C for carrying out control so as to bring into contact with each other a workpiece W1 held by the first main shaft 3a and a workpiece W2 held by the second main shaft 3b while rotating relative to each other, thereby carrying out friction heating, and to stop the relative rotation of the pair of workpieces W1 and W2, after which only the second main shaft 3b is moved in the axial direction while the first main shaft 3a is held stationary, thereby carrying out friction pressure welding of the pair of workpieces W1 and W2, wherein when the friction pressure welding of the pair of workpieces W1 and W2 is carried out, the control means C controls the operation of the first drive source 9a so as to maintain the axial position of the first main shaft 3a.
