Abstract:

Provided is a magnesium alloy member equipped with a substrate comprising a magnesium alloy having an aluminum content that falls within the range of 4.5 to 11 wt.%. The surface forming the substrate is formed by a corresponding pair of opposing sides being a first side and a second side, and the space between the first side and the second side is the thickness of the substrate. When the surface area region for each side is up to a 20μm span from each side in the direction of thickness, each surface area region has, for an arbitrarily selected 20μm × 20μm subregion, at least 10 or more fine precipitates including both Mg and Al with a maximum diameter falling within the range of 0.5μm to 3μm. As a result of at least the surface area region being constructed with a microscopic texture having dispersed fine precipitates, the magnesium alloy member has superior corrosion resistance, and can be used on a chassis, or the like, without having corrosion treatment applied thereto.
