Title:
MAGNESIUM METAL-AIR BATTERY
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2013/018769
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A magnesium metal-air battery which is capable of sufficiently utilizing the capacity of a negative electrode that is formed of magnesium or a magnesium alloy for the battery reaction and which is provided with a positive electrode material that is able to meet the negative electrode capacity. The magnesium metal-air battery is provided with at least one unit cell which is composed of: a negative electrode that is formed of magnesium or a magnesium alloy; a positive electrode-side catalyst layer that contains at least activated carbon which adsorbs oxygen in the air as a positive electrode active material, an anhydrous polyvalent carboxylate salt, manganese and a metal powder; a positive electrode collector that is composed of a conductive material laminated on the positive electrode-side catalyst layer; and a separation member that separates the negative electrode and the positive electrode-side catalyst layer from each other, while allowing permeation of ions. The positive electrode-side catalyst layer may additionally contain carbon black, a metal chloride and graphite. An electromotive force is generated between the negative electrode and the positive electrode collector by adding water or an aqueous metal chloride solution to at least the positive electrode-side catalyst layer when in use. In cases where a plurality of unit cells are connected in series, an insulating body is arranged between each two unit cells.
