Abstract:
A magnetic recording medium having a recording track width of 2 μm or less, wherein the magnetic recording medium comprises a recording layer that includes a powder of particles that include ε iron oxide. The squareness ratio of the magnetic recording medium measured in the travel direction is 30% or less, the squareness ratio S1 measured in the travel direction and the squareness ratio S2 measured in the width direction satisfy the relationship S1 ≥ S2. The coercive force is 220-310 kA/m, the activation volume is 8000 nm3 or less, and the peak ratio X/Y on the switching field distribution (SFD) curve of the main peak height X to the height Y of a subpeak near magnetic zero is t least 3.0.
