Abstract:
A manganese oxide capable of realizing a high-rate performance superior to that of the prior art. There is provided a manganese oxide of the composition formula: MnSaHbMexOc·zH2O (wherein Me is one of Ti, Ca, Mg and Ln or a combination thereof), characterized in that a is in the range of 0.005 to 0.015, b in the range of 0.3 to 0.5, c in the range of 1.8 to 2.3, x 0 or >0 but ≤0.015, and z >0. Preferably, there is provided a manganese oxide wherein the ratio of H to S, b/a, is in the range of 2 to 100. Through incorporation of given amounts of S and H in the manganese oxide, proton (H+) is fed directly and rapidly from the interior of the manganese oxide at the time of discharge reaction, so that even under high load, it becomes easy to follow the discharge reaction (high-rate discharge).
