The objective of the present invention is to provide: a map data storage device that stores map data in a format such that the accessibility of name information necessary for map display is favorable; and a map display device provided with the map data storage device. The map data storage device is provided with: a map data storage unit that stores map data that has been hierarchized and meshified; and a name information storage unit that stores a name list comprising name records. In the map data, each terrestrial feature belongs to the respective mesh of each layer from the bottommost layer to a layer stipulated for each terrestrial feature. The name records are data resulting from tying name information to the number of the greatest display layer and the number of an affiliation baseline mesh. The name list is a list such that the name records have been sorted on the basis of the number of the greatest display layer, the number of the affiliation baseline mesh, and the number of the mesh affiliated with the greatest display layer.
