Abstract:
A mass of carbon fibers obtained by the chemical vapor growth method, characterized in that the mass of carbon fibers has a plurality of nodes, two or more of the carbon fibers independently extend from each of the nodes so that the fibers as a whole spread three-dimensionally, and at least part of the multiple carbon fibers extending from each node are bonded to other node(s), whereby the carbon fibers at least partly have a three-dimensional network structure.  The mass of carbon fibers is further characterized in that the carbon fibers connecting two of the nodes have an average length of 3.0-20.0 µm and that the carbon fibers constituting the mass of carbon fibers have a coefficient of variation concerning outer-diameter distribution, CV ((standard deviation/average value)×100), of 30% or less.  The mass of carbon fibers has satisfactory dispersibility and is reduced in unevenness of conductivity, etc.  The mass of carbon fibers, when added in a small amount, can improve physical properties including electrical properties, mechanical properties, and thermal properties without impairing the properties of the matrix.
