Abstract:
The mass spectrometer according to the present invention is a single-type quadrupole mass spectrometer in which an ion source derived through an ESI method is mounted, the mass spectrometer being a compact device comprising a vacuum pump that has a relatively low exhaust velocity. The inside diameter of a desolvation pipe (11) for guiding ions from an ionization chamber (2) to a first intermediate vacuum chamber (3) is set to 0.4 mm, which is large for a small-scale mass spectrometer, and the exhaust velocity of a rotary pump (18) is established so that the product of the cross-sectional opening area of the desolvation pipe (11) and the pressure inside the first intermediate vacuum chamber (3) is within the range of 15-40 mm2・Pa. This makes it possible to ensure a high detection sensitivity and to reduce clogging of the desolvation pipe (11) due to liquid droplets. In addition, because the pressure inside the first intermediate vacuum chamber (3) is not set higher than necessary, it is possible to use a compact pump having a low exhaust velocity as the rotary pump (18).
