A material for cigarette filters which is useful for selectively and efficiently removing formaldehyde while enabling tobacco flavor ingredients such as nicotine and tar to be retained. A support, e.g., cellulose acetate fibers, is coated with a solution (especially aqueous solution) comprising a polysaccharide having amino groups, such as chitosan, and a polar solvent (e.g., water) [and optionally containing an acid ingredient such as a hydroxy acid (e.g., lactic acid)] to obtain a cigarette-filter material. A cigarette filter constituted of this material can efficiently and selectively remove formaldehyde. For example, when a smoke is passed through the filter, the formaldehyde retention thereof can be reduced to 65% or lower while maintaining a nicotine retention and a tar retention of 80% or higher each.
