Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a mechanical lash adjuster with which an adjustment to increase or decrease the valve clearance can be performed automatically. [Solution] A lash adjuster (20) that is interposed between a cam (19a) and the shaft-end part of a valve (100) biased in the valve-closing direction by means of a valve spring (14), and that adjusts the valve clearance, said lash adjuster being equipped with: a plunger (24) on which the pressing force of the cam (19a) acts; a housing (22) engaged with the plunder (24) in the axial direction via a threaded engagement part, and held so as to be incapable of rotation in the circumferential direction; and a plunger spring (26) that biases the plunger (24) in the opposite direction of the valve spring (14). The threaded engagement part is capable of sliding rotation in the direction in which the axial load acts, but the lead angle and the flank angle of the thread are set such that the threaded engagement part is incapable of relative movement when the thrust torque TF acting on the plunger (24) ≤ the friction torque TB generated at the sliding contact surface (F2) between the plunger (24) and an axial load transmission member. The plunger (24) moves in the direction in which a change in the valve clearance is eliminated, and an adjustment to increase or decrease the valve clearance can be performed automatically and reliably.
