A media processing device (1), which is installed primarily in devices and equipment such as ATM devices and CD players, controls such that when a medium (21) is transported in the inserting direction by means of transporting means (7,8), the media information recorded on the medium (21) is read by a media information read means (6) and stored by recording to memory (18). Whether or not the medium (21) is ejectable is determined by transporting the medium (21) in the ejecting direction by means of the transporting means (7,8). The media information stored in memory (18) is controlled so as to be deleted when it is determined that the medium (21) is not ejectable. In this way, as long as it is not confirmed that the medium (21) is ejectable, the media information recorded in the medium (21) is not output to the host device. As a result, the situation is avoided wherein a pin number is spied upon by another person, and it is possible to prevent the illicit use of the medium (21) by a criminal.
