The present invention provides a media for water purification, in which a filtering process and a back washing process are repeatedly performed or the media is transferred to perform the back washing process and then perform the filtering process again, and a variable filter using same. The media (10) for water purification according to the present invention includes a warp (12) and a weft (14). The weft (14) is spaced from the warp (12) by a predetermined length (L) in a length direction of the warp (12) and coupled to the warp (12). When the back washing process is performed, the warp (12) may be moved between the wefts (14). According to the present invention, since contaminants may be effectively separated from the media (10) when the back washing process is performed, stable filtering efficiency may be maintained for a long time through the effective back washing process. Also, the media may be automatically wound around a chamber (32) of a filter unit (30) to adjust a thickness of a media layer, thereby performing the filtering process. Also, since the back washing process is performed when a pore is closed, a filtered degree may be constantly maintained. Thus, when a quality of inflow water is changed, the media for water purification may effectively cope with water purification equipment having environments different from each other.
