Abstract:
A metal matrix composite (4) constitutes a part of a piston (1). The metal matrix composite (4) is comprised of a matrix comprising a light metal alloy and, incorporated therein, a reinforcing material comprising a metal fiber, wherein the reinforcing material contains Fe and Cr as main components and also contains at least one of Al and Si, the content of Cr being 5 to 30 % and the content of the at least one of Al and Si being 3 to 10 %, and the metal fiber has a diameter of $g(f) 20 $g(m)m to $g(f)100 $g(m)m. The reinforcing material is formed by the molten metal extraction method and has irregularities on its circumferential surface. The solution treatment for the metal matrix composite (4) is carried out in a temperature range of 470 °C to 500 °C for suppressing the formation of an intermetallic compound.
