Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a metal oxide catalyst which achieves a high reaction yield in an ammoxidation or oxidation reaction of propane, while minimizing decrease in the catalyst yield in the reaction over time. A metal oxide catalyst according to the present invention is obtained by having a surface modification agent, which is composed of at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of silicon, phosphorus, boron, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, bismuth, tellurium and thallium, adhere to the surface of a metal oxide that is represented by composition formula (1); and the ratio change rate of absorbance in an accelerated degradation test is 13% or less. MoViAjBkOn composition formula (1) In the formula, A represents Te or Sb; B represents Nb or Ta; each of i and j represents a number of 0.01 to 1.5; j/i is 0.3 to 1.0; k represents a number of 0.001 to 3.0; and n represents a number that is determined in accordance with the oxidation states of the other elements.
