A methanation reaction system, comprising a power plant peak regulating system of the methanation reaction system and a power plant. The methanation reaction system comprises: an electrolytic hydrogen production device, which is connected to a power supply device of a power plant and which is used for receiving a peak-regulating surplus quantity of electricity that is outputted from the power supply device of the power plant so as to prepare hydrogen; a source of carbon dioxide, which is used for providing carbon dioxide; a methanation reaction device, which is connected to the electrolytic hydrogen production device and the source of carbon dioxide and which is used for preparing methane by using hydrogen and carbon dioxide as raw materials. The methanation reaction system provided by the present invention may directly consume the peak-regulating surplus quantity of electricity of the power plant, and indirectly utilize power from wind, light, water or nuclear power curtailment, thereby alleviating the problems of grid balance and peak-to-valley differences. Since the peak-regulating surplus quantity of electricity is used to carry out a hydrogen production operation and finally produce a methane gas, phase-converted storage of the electrical energy is achieved.
