The purpose of the present invention is to provide a methane number calculation method capable of obtaining a somewhat reliable methane number for natural gas that is a gas to be measured regardless of the gas composition and a methane number measurement device capable of monitoring a fuel property of natural gas to be used as a fuel gas. In the present invention, a specific relation is obtained beforehand for the methane numbers and basic calorific values of a plurality of types of reference gasses comprising various natural gasses and having different methane numbers, the basic calorific value of the natural gas that is the gas to be measured and the nitrogen gas concentration and carbon dioxide gas concentration of the gas to be measured are measured, and the methane number of the gas to be measured is calculated from the basic calorific value, nitrogen gas concentration, and carbon dioxide gas concentration of the gas to be measured and the specific relation.
