Provided are a method and an apparatus for transmitting an uplink reference signal in a wireless communication system. A terminal receives, from a base station, information on the maximum repetition number of the uplink reference signal, determines the repetition number of the uplink reference signal using the received information on the maximum repetition number of the uplink reference signal and signal quality obtained through downlink synchronization, and repeatedly transmits, to the base station, the uplink reference signal according to the determined repetition number of the uplink reference signal. The base station determines the uplink coverage of the terminal on the basis of the repeatedly received uplink reference signal.
