Disclosed in embodiments of the present invention are a method and apparatus for detecting whether a video can be played. The method for detecting whether a video can be played in an embodiment of the present invention comprises: acquiring a video source address; then acquiring a first video stream according to the video source address, the first video stream being part of video stream in a second video stream corresponding to the video source address; and determining whether head information of the second video stream can be parsed from the first video stream; if yes, determining that a video corresponding to the video source address can be played, and if not, determining that the video corresponding to the video source address cannot be played. By means of the solution, whether video sources in a third-party video website used in a video aggregation application can be played can be detected, and the video aggregation application can be prevented from using video source addresses corresponding to videos that cannot be played, thereby improving the video playing stability of the video aggregation application.
