Abstract:
Provided is a method for producing acetic acid steadily and safely without needing to cause the raise in pressure in a distillation column. The method comprises: (1) a carbonylation reaction step for reacting methanol with carbon monooxide; (2) a flash step for separating a reaction mixture into a volatile phase and a low-volatile phase; (3) a first distillation step for distilling the volatile phase to separate the volatile phase into a first overhead and a crude acetic acid flow that is rich in acetic acid; and (4) a separation step for separating at least acetaldehyde from the first overhead. The separation step (4) comprises: (6) a second distillation step for placing a pressure control unit 68 in a distillation column and distilling the first overhead while controlling the pressure in the column to separate a second overhead that is rich in acetaldehyde and methyl iodide from a bottom or base flow; and (7) an extraction step for extracting acetaldehyde from the second overhead to separate an extract that is rich in acetaldehyde from a raffinate that is rich in methyl iodide.
