Abstract:
Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for producing silicon by carbon reduction in an electric arc furnace using a carbon material and a silica material that contains iron, aluminum, calcium and titanium respectively in an amount of 0.1% by mass or less. The method and the apparatus for producing silicon are characterized in that the overcurrent flowing through an electrode of the electric arc furnace during the carbon reduction is reduced using a power regulator or the electric arc furnace is operated while setting the hearth power density (PD) of the electric arc furnace at 90 (W/cm2) or higher.
