Provided in the present invention is a method for realizing augmented reality on the basis of plane detection, comprising the following steps: acquiring in real time a video image of an environment scene by means of a video camera; determining an area of interest in the current frame of the video image of the environment scene, and detecting a plane in the area of interest; on the basis of the plane in the area of interest, rendering a virtual object in the current frame of the video image of the environment scene. Further provided in the present invention is an apparatus for realizing augmented reality on the basis of plane detection. The method and the apparatus of the present invention for realizing augmented reality on the basis of a plane detection, by detecting a plane in a user's area of interest in a video image of an environment scene, keep the attitude of a virtual object that has been overlapped and rendered consistent with the plane of the overlapping position thereof, significantly improving the conformity of the virtual object to the real environment scene, realizing the seamless integration of the virtual object and the real environment.
