Abstract:
Provided are a method and an apparatus for separating a neodymium ion and a dysprosium ion from each other easily. An organic molecule capable of forming a complex with each of a neodymium ion and a dysprosium ion is added to an aqueous solution containing both of the ions to form a complex with the neodymium ion, i.e., a neodymium ion complex, and a complex with the dysprosium ion, i.e., a dysprosium ion complex, and these ion complexes are separated from each other by liquid chromatography utilizing the difference between the dipole moment of the neodymium ion complex and the dipole moment of the dysprosium ion complex. As the organic molecule, ethylenediaminetetraethylamine, ethylenediaminetetraethanol, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid amide can be used. The liquid chromatography may be of a column chromatography type or a thin layer chromatography type using silica gel as a stationary phase and water or a mixed solvent of water and acetone as a mobile phase.
