Description:
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING MBMS

SERVICE-RELATED MESSAGES

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS)

communication technology. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving MBMS service -related messages, so as to ensure that a MBMS capable user equipment receives MBMS services.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART

[0002] This section is intended to provide background or context for the present invention that is described in detail in the claims. The depiction herein may include concepts that could be pursued, but are not necessarily ones that have been previously conceived or pursued. Therefore, unless otherwise indicated explicitly herein, the content mentioned in this section is not prior art to the description and claims of the present application, and thus it will be not as admitted to be prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0003] The third generation partnership project (3GPP) has defined MBMS that is for delivering multimedia contents simultaneously to a large set of receivers. 3GPP has disclosed a MBMS

specification set that covers all aspects from radio access of this service to content delivery application and protocol.

[0004] Carrier aggregation (CA) is a type of technology in LTE-A, which serves a user equipment (UE) through aggregating a plurality of carriers. It is well known that in a multicast broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN), all UEs may receive MBMS (multimedia broadcast multicast service) services. However, the definition of Service Area (SA) for MBMS is a geographic concept. It defines a geographic area that provides a MBMS service. On the other hand, for the definition of MBSFN area, it combines service area and frequency layer (or component carrier (CC) under the carrier aggregation (CA)), wherein MBSFN transmission defines the geographic area and frequency band for the MBMS service. Therefore, it may be clear that MBSFN area and service area are both service-specific, instead of UE-specific. Further, both of MBSFN area and service area correspond to specific geographic areas.

[0005] In the service area, a plurality of CCs may be arranged in a same service area (same geographic area). A primary cell (PCell) and secondary cell(s) (SCell) are defined for a UE. Different UEs in a service area have different primary cells according to their respective channel conditions. Therefore, it is clear that the PCell and the SCell in a service area are UE specific.

[0006] There exists such a deployment scenario that a plurality of CC cells overlapping in a same geographic area belong to a same service area.

[0007] However, the current MBMS service provision is always pre -configured in a determined frequency carrier. However, such solution has the following problems. Different UEs are connected to different primary cells (different CC cells) due to different channel conditions, and different CCs will be arranged in different neighboring cells, it would be impossible to enable all MBMS capable UEs in a geographic area to receive all MBMS services. Further, a UE connected to a CC cell cannot obtain the full knowledge of the MBMS service provision information in the service area (geographic location area). In other words, a UE connected to its primary cell can only obtain the MBMS service -related message provided by its primary cell and further receives the MBMS service (in the case of existence) provided by its primary cell, but cannot obtain the relevant message of the MBMS service (in case of existence) provided by a secondary cell to which it is not connected, and thus cannot receive the MBMS service provided by the secondary cell.

[0008] Thus, an objective of the present invention is to provide a solution so as to provide a method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving a MBMS service-related message, thereby ensuring that a MBMS capable UE may obtain relevant information of all MBMS services in its service area

(geographic location area) and further receive the interested MBMS service.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0022] The embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings hereinafter.

[0023] Fig. 1 schematically illustrates an environment in which the present invention may be implemented. [0024] As illustrated in Fig. 1, without loss of generality, service area 1 includes MBSFN area 1 that provides MBMS service 1, non-MBSFN area 2 that provides no MBMS services, and MBSFN area 3 that provides MBMS service 2. It should be understood that the service area may comprise any number of MBFN areas or non-MBSFN areas. Cell 1 and cell 2 form the MBSFN area 1 in the service area 1, in which MBSFN area 1 the MBMS service 1 is provided to a UE connected to node B of cell 1 or cell 2 through CC 1. The cell 3 forms a non-MBSFN area in the service area 1, in which non-MBSFN area a non-MBFN service is provided to a UE connected to node B of cell 3 through CC 2, without providing any MBMS services. Cell 4 and cell 5 form the MBSFN area 2 in the service area 1, in which MBSFN area 2 the MBMS service 2 is provided to a UE of node B of cell 4 or cell 5 through CC 3. It should be understood that in the MBSFN area or in the non-MBSFN area, any number of cells may be included, and each cell may comprise any number of UEs. In order not to confuse the present invention, node B is not shown in this figure.

[0025] In the prior art, for example, user equipment UE 11 connected to node B of cell 1 can only obtain MBMS service information on MBMS service 1 and receive the MBMS service 1. Although UE 11 is located in the service area 1, it cannot obtain information on other MBMS services (for example, MBMS service 2) in the service area 1, and then cannot receive MBMS service 2. Similarly, user equipment UE 41 connected to node B of cell 4 can only obtain MBMS service information on MBMS service 2 and receive the MBMS service 2. Although UE 41 is located in the service area 1, it cannot obtain information on other MBMS services (for example, MBMS service 1) in the service area 1, and then cannot receive MBMS service 1. For the user equipment UE 31 connected to node B of cell 3, because cell 3 is a non-MBMS service cell, although user equipment UE 31 is located in service area 1, it cannot obtain MBMS service information related to any MBMS services (for example, MBMS service 1 and MBMS service 2) in the service area 1 or receive any MBMS services.

[0026] In order to provide information on MBMS service of other neighboring cells (for example, cell 4 and cell 5) to user equipment UE 11 connected to node B of cell 1 , the information on MBMS service of other neighboring cells may be directly transmitted over the MCCH of cell 1 of the current CC 1.

[0027] However, it is inefficient to directly transmit the whole MBMS service configuration messages of other neighboring CC cell to a UE therein, because the amount of messages to be transmitted is relatively large, wherein not all MBMS services are desired to be received by a user of the UE.

[0028] Therefore, because an MBMS service may be uniquely identification by MBMS service ID information, preferably, according to the embodiments of the present invention, only a message of the MBMS service ID information of the other neighboring CC cell, not the whole MBMS service configuration information itself, is transmitted to a UE (for example, user equipment UE11).

[0029] Fig. 2 schematically illustrates a flow chart of a method for transmitting a message to a UE according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0030] The method 200 as shown in Fig. 2 is implemented in the environment as for example illustrated in Fig. 1. The service area in which the method 200 is applied comprises a plurality of CC cells with carrier aggregation, wherein the current cell where the UE is located is a cell of the plurality of CC cells, and the message is a message of MBMS service information of one or more neighboring cells which are located in a service area of the same geographic area as the current cell. The method 200 comprises: step S210, defining an information element of the message, wherein the information element comprises MBMS service ID information of the MBMS service and corresponding cell ID information; and step S220, transmitting the information element to the UE.

[0031] For example, with reference to Fig. 1, with the user equipment UE 11 as an example, the message as defined according to the method of the present invention is transmitted to the user equipment UE11 in the service area 1, wherein the user equipment UE11 is located in the current cell, and the current cell 1 where the user equipment UE 11 is located is a cell of the plurality of CC cells. The message is a MBMS service -related message of one or more neighboring cells (cell 2, cell 3, cell 4 and/or cell 5, etc.) in the service area 1 which are located in the same geographic area as the current cell 1 ; different MBMS services (for example, MBMS service 1 or 2, etc.) are provided in the cell 1 and the neighboring cells through different CCs (for example, CC 1, 2, or 3) or no MBMS service is provided (for example, cell 3). The information element of the message is defined, wherein the information element may comprise MBMS service ID information of a MBMS service (for example, MBMS service 2) of a neighboring cell. Preferably, the information element may further comprise cell ID information of a neighboring cell (for example, cell 4 and cell 5) to which the corresponding CC belongs. Then, the information element is transmitted to the user equipment UE11.

[0032] However, in this manner, for a cell (for example, cell 3) to which a CC (for example, CC 2) that currently does not belong to any MBSFN area, no MBMS-related configuration information and MBMS service -related control plane channel MCCH exist; therefore, the UE connected to node B of cell 3, for example UE31, cannot obtain the MBMS service information of other neighboring cell.

[0033] For this purpose, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the information element is a new information element of the MCCH message, for example

"neighCellMbmsInfoList" information element, for indicating MBMS service information of the neighboring cell. The information element is transmitted to a UE of the cell over the MCCH channel, so as to enable the UE to obtain the MBMS service information of the neighboring cell. Preferably, the new MCCH information element may comprise MBMS service ID information and the corresponding ID information. More preferably, the MBMS service ID information may comprise inter-cell neighboring cell MBMS service ID information and intra-frequency neighboring cell MBMS service ID information.

[0034] The "neighCellMbmsInfoList" information element may be defined in detail as follows:

"neighCellMbmsInfoList" information element

-ASN1 START neighbCellMbmsInfoList -rll ::= SEQUENCE (SIZE(1.. maxCelllnter+maxCelllntra)) OF

neighbCellMbmsInf o-r 11 ghbCellMbmsInfo-] SEQUENCE {

mbms-ServiceldList SEQUENCE (SIZE(1.. maxMB SFN-Area*maxPMCH-PerMB SFN*maxSessionPerPMCH))

OF OCTET STRING (SIZE (3))

... ,

}

-ASN1STOP

[0035] Further, preferably, for the above preferred embodiment, in order to enable the UE that is in a CC cell (for example, cell 3) in the non-MBSFN area that does not provide the MBMS service to obtain the information related to the MBMS service of the neighboring cells in the service area 1 where the UE is located and to further receive the corresponding MBMS service, cooperation of system information block SIB 13 is needed, because relevant MBSFN subframe resource and MCCH configuration information are defined in the SIB 13. For example, the method according to the present invention further comprises: modifying the definition of the current SIB 13 to indicate MCCH configuration information to a cell that does not belong to any MBSFN area (namely, not providing the MBMS service); of course, SIB 13 may also directly comprise the MBMS service-related information of other neighboring cells. More specifically, the method according to the present invention may modify the value range of the information element "MBSFN-ArealnfoList" of SIB 13, such that the SIB 13 comprises an empty MBSFN area information list indicating that the CC cell does not belong to any MBSFN area.

[0036] Alternatively, a default value may be defined for a MBSFN area-related information element in system information block SIB 13, where the default value indicates that the CC cell does not belong to any MBSFN area, wherein the MBSFN area being an area which provides a MBMS service. For example, if the current cell (cell 3) of the UE (for example, UE31) does not belong to any MBSFN area, then the default value is transmitted to the current cell, such that the current cell has a MCCH channel; therefore, the user equipment UE 31 obtains information element of the MBMS service ID of a cell of other neighboring CC and receives the corresponding MBMS service based on the information element.

[0037] According to another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the information element related to the MBMS service in the neighboring cell might not be transmitted over the MCCH channel; instead, the information element related to the MBMS service in the neighboring cell is included in system information block to be signalled to a UE of a CC cell in the service area.

[0038] For example, in a preferred embodiment, the method 200 comprises: including a new information element in SIB 13 to signal the information of the MBMS service provided by the neighboring cell, where the information element, for example, may be indicated as

"neighCellMbmsInfoList" information element.

[0039] In another preferred embodiment, the method 200 comprises: including the information element related to the MBMS service provided by the neighboring cell in SIB 5 to be signaled. In the current RRC protocol TS36.331, the relevant information about inter-frequency cell reselection defines system information block type 5 (SIB 5). According to this preferred embodiment, SIB 5 may be utilized to notify a user in the CC cell of relevant information of the MBMS service of the neighboring cell. Specifically, SIB 5 may comprise the inter-frequency carrier-related information of all neighboring cells comprising the CC. Thus, the information element (for example, MBMS service ID information) "mbms-ServiceldList" field related to the MBMS service of other CC cell (also called neighboring cell) may be added into the "interFreqNeighCelllnfo" information element of SIB 5. As indicated in the following table, SIB 5 comprises detailed definition of "mbms-ServiceldList":

[0040] wherein, the newly added field "mbms-ServiceldList" indicates the MBMS service ID information list of the MBMS service provided by the inter-frequency neighboring cell.

[0041] In the above preferred embodiments of signaling by including the to-be-transmitted information element related to the MBMS service in the neighboring cell into SIB5 and SIB 13, the processing of the signaling mechanism is implemented through the following steps.

[0042] In the service area, when a service session starts or stops, information element modification of SIB 5 or SIB 13 is triggered. The node B updates SIB 5 or SIB 13 (dependent on whether SIB 5 or SIB 13 is modified), and the update is transmitted to the UE through a paging message. Additionally, the node B also transmits the modified SIB 5 or SIB 13 to the UE.

[0043] Correspondingly, Fig. 3 schematically illustrates a block diagram of an apparatus for transmitting a message to a UE according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0044] The apparatus 300 as illustrated in Fig. 3 is implemented in the environment as for example illustrated in Fig. 1. The service area in which the apparatus 300 is applied comprises a plurality of CC cells with carrier aggregation, wherein the current cell where the UE is located is a cell of the plurality of CC cells, and the message is a message of MBMS service information of one or more neighboring cells that are located in the service area of the same geographic area as the current cell. The apparatus 300 comprises means 310 for defining an information element of the message, wherein the information element comprises MBMS service ID information of the MBMS service and corresponding cell ID information; and means 320 for transmitting the information element to the UE.

[0045] Preferably, the information element is a new information element of a MBMS control channel MCCH message.
