Provided is a method for carrying out continuous electrolytic etching on an oriented magnetic steel strip, the method including: a mask formation step for forming an etching mask so as to leave a linear exposed portion on the surface of an oriented magnetic steel strip 1 cold-rolled to a final thickness; a centering step for centering the oriented magnetic steel strip using a position detection sensor 9 and a centering device 8 which are arranged immediately in front of an electrolytic etching apparatus 4; and a groove formation step for bringing the oriented magnetic steel strip into contact with conductor rolls 43a, 43b in the electrolytic etching apparatus and immersing the strip in an electrolytic bath 46 so that the strip faces an electrode 42 arranged within the electrolytic bath, passing a current between the conductor rolls and the electrode to carry out an electrolytic etching process for electrolytically etching the oriented magnetic steel strip, and forming a linear groove in the surface of the oriented magnetic steel strip.
