Title:
METHOD FOR CLEANING SOILS CONTAMINATED BY PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1998/050178
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to the protection of the environment and may be used for cleaning soils which have been contaminated by recent or past crude oil or petroleum product spills. This invention essentially relates to a method for cleaning soils contaminated by petroleum products, wherein said method includes mixing the soil with thermally-fractionated graphite, adding water thereto and separating the sorbant that floats back to the surface together with the petroleum products absorbed by it. The soil and the sorbant may be mixed locally using agricultural or road-construction machines as well as in mixing vessels. In order to accelerate this process, the treatment of past petroleum product spills may include the addition of a builder-solvent such as kerosene, the application of a cavitation action or a combination thereof. The thermally fractionated graphite may be regenerated several times by submitting the sorbant-recovered petroleum products to a sublimation, extraction or pressing process.
