Abstract:
Disclosed is a method for concentrating 15N, a heavy nitrogen isotope,
to the level of 50 atm% or greater with high efficiency. The method employs two
or more distillation columns (T1 - T4) each equipped with at least one condenser
(C1 – C4) and at least one reboiler (R1 – R4). These distillation
columns are serially connected to continuously distill nitrogen N2
at a low temperature, thereby concentrating an isotope molecule 14N15N
and/or 15N2 which contains a heavy nitrogen isotope 15N.
A portion of the nitrogen under distillation is drawn out and subjected to isotope
scrambling by means of an isotope scrambler (S1), and at least a portion of the
nitrogen yielded after the isotope scrambling is returned to the distillation
step. In this manner, nitrogen N2 having a 15N condensation
degree of 50 atom% or greater.
