A method of controlling a machine tool, the method being capable of, without using a mechanism for offsetting a cutter (13) and a workpiece (50) from each other, preventing interference between the cutter and the workpiece when the cutter is relieved.  A machine tool is also provided.  A control device (40) repeats the following steps to control working of the workpiece (50): a working step for working the workpiece (50) by moving, while rotating both the workpiece (50) and the cutter (13) for working the workpiece (50), the cutter (13) in the direction parallel to the rotation axis of the cutter (13), and a return step for returning the cutter (13) to the work start position after the completion of the working step.  Upon completion of the working step, the control device (40) performs offset control so that the cutter (13) is separated from the workpiece (50) in the rotational direction of the cutter.
