Provided are a method for controlling rotation of a main spindle which can perform machining such that chattering vibration does not occur without using a special tool such as an irregular pitch blade or a means for detecting chattering vibration, and a controller of a machine tool. In a method for controlling rotation of a main spindle and a controller of a machine tool, main spindle rotational speed variation data for determining how the rotational speed of a main spindle is varied for a command speed is stored in correspondence with machining conditions and stability limit data, the main spindle rotational speed variation data for reducing the vibration is selected from the commanded main spindle rotational speed and the machining conditions and the stored stability limit data, and then the rotational speed of a main spindle is varied based on the selected main spindle rotational speed variation data.
