The invention relates to a method for automatically loading drums (8) containing radioactive waste into a container (2) by means of a loading device (10) in an automatic operation. A camera (20) is provided for determining the exact position of the container (2) to be loaded and the position of the container (2) in the camera co-ordinate system (XK,YK) is determined by means of image recognition. The image co-ordinates (X1,Y1) in the camera co-ordinate system that have been determined are converted into displacement co-ordinates (X2,Y2) in the co-ordinate system of the loading device (10) using a calculation rule that has been previously stored, so that the loading device (10) can be propelled into the individual loading positions in the container (2) in a precise, fully-automatic manner.
