Abstract:
A propeller shaft (11) driven by a main machine (12) is provided with a propeller (13) mounted in such a manner that the blade angle of the propeller (13) is variable. The blade angle of the propeller (13) is detected by a blade angle detecting means of a blade angle adjusting mechanism (14). Torque applied to the propeller shaft (11) is detected by a shaft horsepower meter (17). Advance coefficient data corresponding to blade angles, loads, and rotational speeds are stored in an advance coefficient data storage section (25), and the advance coefficient which is, so to speak, the speed of flow about the propeller is obtained on the basis of the detected blade angle and the detected load. The optimum blade angle corresponding to the advance coefficient is obtained on the basis of pitch data relating to optimum blade angles stored in an optimum pitch data storage section (26) and of the detected blade angle, and the blade angle of the propeller (13) is controlled on the basis of the optimum blade angle. The configuration allows the ship to navigate by controlling the blade angle according to the field of flow so that the efficiency of the propeller is maximum.
