Abstract:
In this method for controlling an internal combustion engine, an air-fuel mixture which has an air-fuel ratio leaner than a theoretical air-fuel ratio is formed in a cylinder by a first fuel injection, and while a low-temperature oxidation reaction is taking place in the air-fuel mixture during a compression stroke, a second fuel injection is carried out to inject fuel toward the vicinity of a discharge channel of an ignition plug, and following the second fuel injection, spark ignition of the fuel injected by the second fuel injection is carried out by a spark plug when a spark discharge from the spark plug is able to reach the fuel.
