Abstract:
Disclosed is an information recording/reproducing method which is provided with: a layer number detecting step wherein the power of an optical beam outputted from a light source (LD) is set to second power, which is weaker than first power, and the number of recording layers (21) that an optical disc (2) has is detected; a lens control step wherein an objective lens is controlled such that the optical beam is collected to one recording layer, i.e., the closest recording layer to the objective lens (11), under the condition that the detected number of layers is 3 or more; a power setting step wherein the power of the optical beam is set to third power, i.e., power between the first power and the second power; a layer number specifying step wherein the number of recording layers that the optical disc has is specified on the basis of layer information, which is information relating to said recording layer; and a type specifying step wherein the power of the optical beam is set to the first power, layer type information previously recorded on said recording layer is read, and on the basis of the read layer type information, the type of the optical disc is specified.
