Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a method for electing a Designated Router (DR) for a multicast group G in a network which includes a plurality of PIM-SM routers and a plurality of hosts which join group G. The method comprises, at each of the plurality of routers, for an interface of the router on which an Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) Membership Report message for group G is received: performing, for each of the plurality of routers RE, a hash function based on a group address of group G and a primary ip address of the PIM-SM router RE, and electing a PIM-SM router with the highest resulting hash value as a DR for group G on that interface. A PIM-SM router for performing the method is also provided.
